CHAPTER 43

BETHESDA, MARYLAND

“I CAN HEAR YOU,” Richard Purell said. Fiona and Rachel heard his voice. But they did not see him. “Stop talking about me. She’s going to think I’m some sort of pervert.” He stuck his head around the corner. “Don’t listen to her. She’s always trying to give me away to other women. The problem is they don’t want me. So as long as she can’t pawn me off onto some unexpecting desirable or desperate woman, she feels guilty for me and stays with me. I think she has her new husband all picked out. And I’m in the way of their plans, if you get what I mean?” He winked.

“What’s his name?” Rachel said. “I may want in on this.”

“Rachel, don’t play into his hands,” Fiona said. “He’s warped.” They laughed. “Did you tell the boys she’s here?” Fiona asked him. “They have to go. She doesn’t have time to listen to you make up stories about me. While I tell the truth about you.”

“I’m out, Rachel,” he said.

“Watch him, Rachel,” Fiona said. “Don’t be alone with him.”

He waved his hand in the air and left them talking by the front door. A minute later Rachel’s sons came around the corner carrying their backpacks. Fiona turned around. West, 10, her youngest son, was following Rachel’s sons. He looked disappointed.

“The answer is still no,” Fiona said. “You boys need to let us know ahead of time if you want to spend the night at each other’s house. You can’t just spring it on us at the last minute. We have schedules, too, you know.”

“Mom,” West said. “Peter and Matthew want to stay over. Please. We just thought it was better for everyone.”

Fiona looked at Rachel incredulously. Rachel could see the question she was asking. Is it okay with you? If it is okay with you, it is okay with me. Rachel was unsure if she should put her kids off on Fiona that late at night. It was not fair to her and Richard. They had three of their own kids to get ready for school the next morning.

“Boys, I’m not sure about tonight,” Rachel said. “You’re putting a lot on Fiona’s plate at the last moment. We’ll do this another time.” Fiona was motioning to Rachel that it was okay. She shut her eyes and nodded to let her know it was fine. “You don’t have clothes for tomorrow.”

“Actually, they do,” Fiona said. “Mr knows it all, Richard, was the catalyst for this confusion. He’s probably getting ready for bed and neglecting his duties. He asked the boys if they wanted to stay. And he waited for them to pick out clothes from your house and bring them over here. So, yes, they have clothes.”

Rachel was saying she was sorry. Fiona mouthed the words. It’s okay.

“Okay, boys,” Rachel said. “You can stay. But you better be on your best behavior.” They yelled and ran off. “No good night?” Peter and Matthew ran back and hugged her and kissed her good night.
